Advert evaluation report:

Evaluation Report Self Assessment:

I was asked to create a anti bullying and social messaging campaign advertisement for the company Connect Cast. The advert must be around 25-30 seconds in length. I will self assessing said advert in order to evaluate the effectiveness of this advertisement. The basic structure of this advert is of a talking head advertisement, it's similar to the style of a vox pop video. With the persuasive techniques being how the advert uses five teenagers explaining their experiences about cyber bullying online; giving the emotional response of sympathy for the audience.

I believe that the opening of this advert is strong because the viewer can automatically see that the advert is about cyber bullying, displaying the message quickly and clearly; which is essential given the short amount of time given for an advert. This clear from the people featured start to discuss said issue and their experiences on this subject. I gave the five actors (including myself) the script for the advert and then filmed them saying large chunks of the script while looking into the camera. To which i then edited the footage in order to make all the clips match with each other, to look like one long speech with each line leading into the next. But also it was done in order to keep up the pacing of the video to not bore the audience with slow pacing. While the advert may not change camera angles and locations, it does feature a constant change in the actors featured on screen; this being conventional of talking head adverts. Which has been done in order to show the audience that many different teenagers of gender and race experience cyber bullying. In which this gives the viewer as much information as possible when it comes to the subject of the video itself.

I would compare my advert to something like the 'Words Hurt' advert by Dispute Resolution (another anti bullying company) as they as simular in terms of promoting online safety and anti bullying in general. They also both feature a bleak and somber tone when it comes to the atmosphere of the footage on screen. They also go through the details and emotions of people that have or are expeirencing bullying. Along with both of these adverts featuring a cast entirely of young people and are also both filmed in a school. Which has been done in order to directly appeal to the target audience of teenagers.

For this advert I have used two music files for this advert. The first piece of music at the start of the advert is called 'Anguish', I choose this because i felt that it gave the somber and dark tone in order to display to the audience the problem with cyber bullying that some teenagers fit. With them discussing the problems in the beginning, and I felt the music fit the scene well. The second piece of music I used for the ending of the advert was called 'Montauk Point'; which was a upbeat guitar track. In that part of the advert there is information given about how to fight and combat cyber bullying. The tone of the video ends up changing and I felt that the upbeat track fits well with this scene at the end.

During the making process of this advert, i had made two drafts of the advert; both of which were shown to my client. I had received feedback from the client of what worked and what didn't, then i thought about how i would redo the parts of the advert that needed to be redone. The first draft ended up with a few changes added and parts flat out removed. For example she thought one of the talking head clips that featured could've had better line delivery. So both clips were removed, and she suggested that i record more clips; changing the amount of people i had from two to five people. She also asked me to add another track at the end, i added a upbeat guitar track at that part. This helped to lighten the mood when the teens featured discussed methods of combating the issue.

I feel that I could've displayed more information and explained some of the information in more detail. For example I feel that I could so how the website ConnectCast could help teenagers that face this issue, along with more ways that people could combat the issue of cyber bullying on their own. It also clear that some of the teens featured in the advert look like they forgot what they were saying given the way the speak in some part of the footage. Speaking of the lines, I felt that some of them were done too quickly looking back on it in editing; such as the footage of the female teen, where her line was said too fast.

The advert concludes with the slogan 'stay connected, stay safe'. In which this fades out and the ConnectCast company logo fades onto the screen; all while the company website is shown at the bottom of the screen. This is effective because it shows the viewer where to go for more information on the subject and for mentioned company. This generates interest in the company, so the viewer can search for what the company does and how they do so.

Compared to my original plan for this advert there are quite a few differences between the original plan and final draft. Firstly the opening was changed from having our actors enter the frame and sit on chairs, to just start of with them speaking to the camera; which ended up making the advert's pacing flow much smoother. And secondly there were meant to be close ups of the actors faces and eyes to further show the emotions of these people; then upon editing draft one i felt they had become unnecessary for the video.

After i had completed my advert, i gathered a focus group together in order to discuss the effectiveness of the advert. I showed them the video and then asked them some questions based on what is showed them. The first two questions i asked the group what was the subject of the video and how they were able to tell; this was to see if it could successfully communicate their message. All three members of the groups identified it as anti-bullying, and agreed that the advert's message was clear and straight to the point. They also mention how it's successful in advertising the aid and support that Connectcast will give to people who face the issues being addressed. They also said it's clear that it aims for a audience of teenagers, which is what i was aiming to do; so the advert is shown to be effective in it's goals.

During the making process of this advert I've further developed the editing skills I've used in my previous moving image projects; such as my ident and my music video. For starters I used the skills of quick cutting editing that I had used for my music video, in order keep the pacing of the advert from dragging. I've improved some of the skills I've previously used, such the synchronizing of footage. In which I did this for the cut away shots of the phone, and having the audio of the teens laid underneath; making the audio last the same length as the separate footage, making the clips match.

Radio logo Evaluation: Lock.

I think Lock represents genres such as house music older music styles and the genres that are used in house music such as disco, funk, R&B etc. I chose this name for a station of that genre, because when  i was designing the logo for Lock the first idea that came to mind was a lock and a key. After I had that idea for the logo design I then decided to make the station play house music because houses have locks on their doors. In short the decision of what genre music to give to this particular station, was made mostly from a creative design decision.

My target audience for this radio station is a older audience compared to my other two stations. This age range would be people around the ages of 28 to 35 years. The reason I chose this demographic is because the people in that age group were younger and were into these upbeat styles of music like disco, funk and jazz music. In short the people in the age range I've chosen would be a younger age when these styles would be more popular.

To appeal to the target audience I made the logo for this station look eye catching. I did this by giving it bright colours; in the case of this ident the colour was bright yellow.  I also added the outer glow around the logo itself so it can be eye catching and bright. Also I did this so it can link to the club like feeling with the bright lights and colours; with the bright yellow showing the upbeat and youthful nature of the station and the music that they'll be playing. I added this choice because clubs are where music styles of house music such as disco can be played.

I think the main competitor for Lock would stations like Heart. I say this because Heart and other stations play similar music during that time of day, that music being: club music, and older popular songs. Our station is trying to have a similar audience of people who enjoy listening to these songs when they were younger; as a way recapturing the youth of our older listeners.

When creating this logo on Photoshop I wanted to create to something simple and yet eye catching and appealing. I did this by coming up with a simple and yet creative concept with the Lock logo and having the key on the edge of the word Lock.  This would give a good understanding of what genre of music the station would be playing, which is house music. This way it would appeal to the 25-35 year old target audience who enjoy that type of music and have a good time listening to it. I then added the bright colours and the outer glow so it’ll be eye catching and the target audience could draw the connection to club music, by having the bright lights and colours.

First of all I started to find a suitable font from Dafont.com. I looked for different style for fonts that was a: club like disco style. In the end I found a font called Buzz saw, which suited the club style very well; I used this font in the two other logos I was making as part of the course. I did this decision so I could show that all three logos were connected with each other. After I downloaded the font onto Photoshop I then typed Lock onto a blank document, coloured the word Lock in bright yellow; I then changed the size thickness of the word itself until I had at the right size I wanted it. After I've finished with the logo word I moved on the rest of the logo.

I took an image of a key from Google images and copied then it onto Photoshop. After that I changed the size and width of the image, making it smaller and wider to match up with the Lock word, i linked the two shape layers together and changed the colour into having the same bright yellow colour the word Lock had. I made it bright yellow in order to make the logo eye catching and to match it to the colour commonly known for keys in drawing and cartoons. With said colour scheme being used to reflect the lively personality of the station.

I then used a circle and a triangle from Photoshops custom shapes tool and used them to make a key hole shape, i then coloured both shapes black and then placed the finished shape over the O. Next i then added a thick line under the logo in order to make the logo look neater. This was also made with the custom shapes tool selection on Photoshop, i then adjusted the size, width and length until the logo looked right. After i did that i coloured the line yellow to match the logo.

After I got my feedback from my audience I added a small house in the L in Lock in order to make sure the style of music was made clear to the audience. I made the house using different shapes from the Photoshop custom shapes tool which included: squares, triangles and other shapes in order to make the house. To finish of I made the house a black colour and then added the white door.

As with my previous two logos, I'm very pleased with how the logo came out after drawing the design on paper. I'm very glad that the key and Lock word matched up together as if it's part of the key. I feel it came out looking very well when compared to the design i've drawn on paper. Since starting the creation of my logo it on Photoshop, I've added extra features to the design. The main new feature I've added to the design is the small house inside the L in Lock. This was added after my target audience commented that this logo wasn't to clear about what listeners of a certain genre of music the logo was aiming for. So in the end; i made the house and added as part of the logo, in order to make the advertising of its genre more clearer.

When i asked my audience for feedback on the logo they said it fits well with the club sort of genre; which house music borrows elements from. The audience also said they liked the brightly coloured logo itself because it makes the logo stand out and is very bright and eye catching. Also they said that it reminds them of the bright lights which can be seen at discos. But as i mentioned before they didn't know what exact genre the logo was aiming at when i first gave them the logos out for assessment, this lead my to add the house to make the genre of choice more clearer. That was  In short the audience did agree that this logo did fit well for the genre. But needed some more indication of the genre; which was added later on.

During these lessons when i was creating my logos on Photoshop i have developed some of my Photoshop skills. First of all I've developed some of my editing skills on Photoshop with tools like the lasso and the magic wand making of my work look neater. Also I've improved my skills of using layer filters in terms of changing colours and brightness. Not only that but I've developed some of my skills of identifying genres for the station options i was given, and to create and develop ideas solely based on those station names and what i could figure out from the names i was given for the stations. Such as genre, style of music etc.

This logo compares to the other two logos I've created in two major ways: The first feature is the font I used, and the second design feature is the design that the logos use. The design and look is used by all three logos, which includes the name of the radio station, and a shape representing the name; such as pulse having a pulse line, and Lock having a key at the end of the logo.I also kept the font of each of the three logos the same so it can be clear that all the logos are connect with each other as they are meant to be.

If i was to add anything new to the Lock logo in order to improve it, i would've added a background, to be exact i would choose a dark coloured back ground like black or a dark blue. The reason i would add this to my logo is so the bright colour yellow of everything in the logo could stand out further against the dark background colours. Also after completing the logo i found out the tone of the key was darker compared to the Lock word. It is an massive problematic difference; but it would look much better if the tones stayed consistent with each other.

Radio Logo Evaluation: Buzz

Buzz:
I think Buzz represents pop music and the pop genre in general. I chose this genre for Buzz because pop music is known to be very active and upbeat, and the name buzz sounds very active and energetic. So i wanted the connection of upbeat, active and youthful tunes to be shown in the name of the station. Also this type of music is made by DJ's and on computers; in short they are often made electronically on software's. Also buzz sounds like a word to describe electricity; as in electric buzz. To show more of the energetic side of the station.

The target audience for my station would young people around the ages of 18 or older. I chose this age group as my target audience because a lot of people in that age range often go to night clubs where a lot of music in the pop genre is played so people can dance to the music. Also a lot of young people at the ages of 18-25 are very active and energetic, as young people are often thought as. This would be the reason why our music would be upbeat, so that it can seem youthful and active to the listeners.

To aim to my target audience I made the logo eye catching with bright colours to grab attention of the target audience I'm aiming for. For this particular logo the colours I used were: blue with a yellow glow. The bright colours were added to look eye catching and to be appealing. The choose of colours were used to reflect upon the lively and active nature of the station and the music they broadcast. Given how the genre of of choice is pop music, i felt that communicating the energetic feeling of the station was important to gain the attention of the audience for this type of music. I also added the lighting strike in the logo so the image can show that the radio station is very energetic and active, which will help reflect on the upbeat tone of pop music being broadcasted.

I think the main competitor against my radio station would be Capital radio. I say they would be the main competitor against my station because Capital plays pop music as its main genre of music that the station plays on a daily basis; and i as I said before pop music would be the genre of choice for this particular station. With that said Capital uses the same genre of music in order to aim to the same young target audience that Buzz will try to aim to. However my station will stand out by playing older pop songs as well as the new ones, rather than just being limited to only the latest hits.

For this logo I wanted to create a look that was eye catching and a logo that would show our target audience what genre of music our station plays which is: upbeat music, currant chart music and big club anthems. This logo would also appeal to a young audience a round the ages of 18 to 25 who would be the age group would enjoy listening to the music this station will broadcast, so it would appeal to that age group.

First of all I started to find a suitable font from Dafont.com. I looked for different style for fonts that were: trendy, pop style font. I decided to use the font i used for my previous logo which was called Buzz saw. I decided to use the same font in this logo, so I could make sure the connection between all the logos as clear. After I imported the font on to Photoshop I then typed Buzz onto a blank photoshop document, coloured the Buzz word in blue; I then messed around with the size thickness of the word itself changing it until I had at the right size. After I've finished with the word I moved on the rest of the logo.

I made a lighting bolt shape with the customs shapes tool on Photoshop. I made the size and width smaller and wider in order to match up with the buzz word I just created, I linked the two later shapes together as if the bolt was striking the Z in buzz. This being done in order to show how lively the station is, as well as the music that's being played at the station.

After i did this i then added a thick line under the logo in order to make the logo look neater. I made this using the rectangle in the custom shapes selection on Photoshop and adjusted the size, width and length until the logo look right. After i did that i coloured the line blue to match with the logo.

I then added an outer glow to make the logo eye catching.  This was the same reason I added the outer glow around the lighting strike. I also did that to show the club style with bright lights and colours being present, as shown with the bright colours I used which makes the logo stand out and grab the eye of our target audience.

Overall I'm very pleased with how the logo came out after drawing the design on paper. I feel it came out looking very well when compared to the design i drew for it. Since starting to create the logo using Photoshop I've added extra features to the design. The main new feature I've added to the design is the outer glow around the logo itself. the reason for adding the glow helped me give the logo of being a club type logo and helped make the logo itself more eye catching to look at. In short this helped me achieved my desired effect for my logo.

When i asked my audience for feedback on the logo they said it fits well with the pop genre. They said they liked the glows around the brightly coloured logo, because it makes the logo stand out very well and is very eye catching. Also they said that it reminds them of the bright lights shown at clubs and discos. Overall the audience did agree that this logo did fit well for the genre.

When i was creating my logos on Photoshop i have developed some of my Photoshop skills. First of all I've developed some of editing skills on Photoshop with tools like the lasso and the magic wand making of my work look neater and in proportions. Also I've improved using layer filters in terms of changing colours, brightness, outer glows etc. Not only that but I've developed some of my skills of identifying genres for the station options i was given, and to create and develop ideas solely based on those station names and what I could figure out from the names i was given for the stations. Such as genre, style of music etc.

This logo compares to the other two I've created in two major ways: The first feature is the font which was used, and the second design feature is the design that each logo has. The design and look is used by all three logos, which includes the name of the radio station, and a shape representing the name; such as Buzz having a electric bolt; because buzz can be related to electricity. While other examples include Lock having a key at the end of the logo.I've also kept the font of each of the three logos the same. This was so it can be clear that all the logos are connect with each other as they are meant to be.

If i was to add anything new to the Buzz logo in order to improve it, i would've added a background, to be exact i would've chosen a dark coloured back ground like black. The reason i would add this to my logo is so the bright colours and glow around the logo and the lighting bolt could stand out further against the dark background colours. Because at times the edge of the logo's outer glow looks like its blending into the background when i put the logo onto a blank document. This would be the same improvement I would add to my other two logos.

Radio Logo Evaluation: Pulse

Radio Logo Evaluation:

Pulse:
I think Pulse represents genres like techno and dub step; this would be music performed by artist like Deadmau5 and Pendulum as two examples.  I chose this name for the station of that genre, because a pulse line are commonly used in music videos for techno songs with the line moving up and down the beat of the tune being played; Calvin Harris and Deadmau5 both use these pulse lines a lot in their videos. In short I remembered that image of pulse lines used in dub step, and when I saw the name pulse in our choices of station names. I went straight forward using this as an idea for the station. As that image is commonly used to represent sound.

My target audience for this radio station is younger people around the ages of 18-25 years. The reason I chose this demographic is because the people in that age group usually go out clubbing on a night out with their friends, and techno music is usually played at nightclubs for people to dance with. To appeal to that target audience I made the logo for this station eye catching. I did this by giving it bright colours; the colour i chose was bright green.  I also added the outer glow around the logo itself so it can be eye catching and stand out when on a poster, to grab attention. Also I did this so it can link to the club like feeling with the bright lights and colours; similar to the multicolour lights they use. This will also help to show the lively, active and youthful personality of the station, as seen in its bright and vibrant design.

I think the main competitor against Pulse would stations like Radio 1 on weekend nights. I say this because Radio 1 and other stations play similar music during that time of day during the weekend on Saturday nights, that music being: club music, dub step, techno music etc. Not to mention that stations like these and others often get famous DJ’s to remix the songs that the station plays.  Our station is trying to have a similar audience of people who enjoy and have fun listen to this sort of music on the weekend with their mates.

When creating this logo on Photoshop I wanted to create to something simple and yet eye catching and appealing. I did this by coming up with a simple and yet creative concept with the Pulse logo and having the pulse line dropping down from the edge of the word pulse.  This would give a good understanding of what genre of music the station would be playing, which is techno music. This way it would appeal to the 18-25 year old target audience who enjoy that type of music and have a good time listening to it. I then added the bright colours and the outer glow so it’ll be eye catching and the target audience could draw the connection to club music, by having the bright lights and colours.

First of all I started to find a suitable font from Dafont.com. I looked for different style for fonts that were: trendy, techno, clubby etc. In the end I found a font called Buzz saw, which suited the club style very well; I later used this font in the two other logos I was making alongside this one. I did that so I could show that all the logos were connected with each other. After I imported the font on to Photoshop I then typed Pulse onto a blank document, and coloured the Pulse word in bright green; I then messed around with the size thickness of the word itself changing it until I had at the right size I wanted it to be.
After I’ve finished with the word I moved on the rest of the logo. I took an image of a pulse line from Google images and brought it on to Photoshop. After that I made the size and width smaller and wider to match up with the pulse word I just typed, i linked the two shapes together and changed them into having the same bright green colour the word pulse had.
I made it bright green in order to make the logo eye catching and to stand out from the background. This was the same reason i added the outer glow around the pulse line, added a inner glow for the rest of the logo. I also did that to show the club style with bright lights and colours being present, as shown with the bright colours i used. This style also helps to link the station with other styles of techno like House music. I then added a thick line underneath the logo in order to make the logo look neat. I made this using a rectangle in the custom shapes selection on Photoshop and i then adjusted the size, width and length until the logo look right.

I'm very pleased with how the logo came out after drawing the design for it. I'm glad that the look of a pulse line dropping of from the pulse word. I feel it came out looking very well when compared to the design i drew up for it. Since starting to create it on Photoshop I've added extra features to the design. The main new feature I've added to the design is the outer glow around the logo itself. The reason for adding the glow helped me give the logo of being a club type look and helped make the logo more eye catching to look at. In short i have achived the desired effect for my logo.

When i asked my audience for feedback on the logo they said it fits well with the club and techno genre. They said they liked the glows around the brightly coloured logo itself because it makes the logo stand out and is very eye catching. Also they said that it reminds them of the bright lights shown at clubs and discos. In short the audience did agree that this logo did fit well for the genre.

During these lessons when i was creating my logos on Photoshop i have developed some of my Photoshop skills. First of all I've developed some of editing skills on Photoshop with tools like the lasso and the magic wand making of my work look neater. Also I've improved using layer filters in terms of changing colours, brightness, outer glows etc. Not only that I've developed some of my skills of identifying genres for the station options i was given, and to create and develop ideas solely based on those station names and what i could figure out from the names i was given for the stations. Such as genre, style of music etc.

This logo compares to the other two logos i've creatred in two major ways: The first feature is the font i used, and the second design feature is the design that the logos use. The design and look is used by all three logos, which includes the name of the radio station, and a shape representing the name; such as pulse having a pulse line, and Lock having a key at the end of the logo.I also kept the font of each of the three logos the same so it can be clear that all the logos are connect with each other as they are meant to be.

If i was to add anything new to the Pulse logo in order to improve it, i would've added a background, to be exact i would choose a dark coloured back ground like black or a dark blue. The reason i would add this to my logo is so the bright colours and glow around the logo and the pulse line could stand out further against the dark background colours. Because at times the edge of the logo's outer glow looks like its blending into the background when i put the logo onto a blank word document.
