Advertising styles and forms Presentation (Draft one)

The style of this advertisement is a comedic style. We can tell this by the fact that the ad's main character is blowing up traffic lights and other modern day inconveniences; all while the advert has some very upbeat and care free music playing through out the whole advert.  One of the techniques used by the advertisement is overt messages. Such as the message of: have fun by playing our game. The target audience for this product are males in their 20s and older. We can tell this due to that the two main actors in this advertisement are both male and look like their in their 20s.

One of the advertising techniques that is clearly seen, is the use of messages that are speaking to the viewer. Such as the overt message of men will smell better if they start using the body wash used in the advertisement. But also the ad features a more hidden message of men will be able to get women attracted to them if they use that body wash. The target audience is for both men and women. We can tell this due to how the main actor directly addresses the female viewers. But also the ad mentions how their man can smell better with this brand of body wash.
In this advertisement we can see that the video is made in a serious style, doesn't go overlay dramatic like some other advertisements The advert also promises some reward power to the viewer, by promising that: their room, house or other place they want to paint will look good after using their paint to decorate it. Which is also a hidden message of how cool the paint and colours will make your place look good. The audience that is targeted in this advertisement is young adults. We can tell this due to that nearly every actor in this advert are adults; and the main two leads look like they're in their late 20s or possibly over.

This advert uses a intertxuality style to sell the product it is selling, in this case the pop culture item this advert uses is Captain America and the film Captain America: The Winter Soldier; in which the ad uses clips and props from the film. One of the techniques this advert uses is celebrity endorsement in order to sell the product. In this case the celebrity is Samuel L Jackson, who is also in The Winter Soldier. The target audience for this advert would be current users of Sky Broadband. This is due to the ad marketing something that those people would need in order to keep their system functioning normally and properly.
This advert uses a serious and yet informative style in order to successfully describe and sale this product. This adverts technique to fully show what this channel does, by giving a sneak preview of what is being shown on the channel. This helps explain the overt message of: if you're "visually impaired" this channel will help to be to understand whats o screen by explaining and describing it to the viewer. Like it is doing on the advert. The animation used in the footage is used further to illustrate that point to the viewer. The target audience for this advert are people who are blind or visually impaired. Mainly because it shows them that they'll be able to watch shows on that channel with the audio narratives the channel provides.

Conventions found in a music video.

The music video I've decided to choose for my homework is Pendulum's Watercolour.

The music video Conventions in the video:
  • The artist of the song are involved in the majority of the music video
  • The artist are performing the song, by playing their instruments like drums
  • The bands main singer is singing along with the lyrics by lip syncing.
  • The singer is singing the songs in close up of his face, whether they'd be a side or front view of his face, along with some mid shots only seeing the top half of his body.
  • The main singer of the band looks directly at the audience and into the camera having eye contact with the audience, which is addressing the video to them.
  • Slow motion is used during the video, an example would be when the band are playing and when the dancers can be seen in the chorus of the song. Where they moving slower then the tune itself.
  • The video cutting between three different locations. These being: a group of dancers in a rave, the band in a studio and an object in space. In each verse and chorus will switch between two of each location.
  • The video starts when the music starts and ends at the same time when the music stops.
  • This video uses a wide variety of shots. From close ups of the singer and drummer and the wide shots of the singer in front of the wall of amps.
  • There are high angle shots being used in the video, but mostly on the dancers and the drummer.

  • At each bar change, the shot type will change as well cutting from one thing to another through out the video. And it'll do this to the beat of the tune.
  • Most of the the video is filmed in a studio with scenes like the performance of the band or the dancers. While other shots are animated, particularly the shots in space.
  • The video has uses its editing cuts in order to create a fast sense of dynamic energy, especially with a tune like this.
  • The camera also has a lot of movements as well to create a dynamic look. These includes panning shots of the whole band, the animated segments, panning shots of the drummer and shaky movements to show the high energy the beat has.

Music video genre conventions:

For this assignment I've decided to look at the conventions of music videos in the rock music genre. So I've researched five examples of rock music videos where these conventions can be found. These conventions would include video elements like: content, tempo, editing etc.

First of this is a video convention of imagery. This is case the imagery that would be used is the band playing their instruments in a performance space. This could be anywhere from a stage at a concert, a location made for the video, or in this example a realistic location such as a ware house. This convention is used to show who plays the song and instruments are being played like guitar or drums.

Another imagery related convention is about what actually happens in the video itself. This being the video's tempo depending on the speed of the song that it uses, whether it would be fast or slow. In this example the song has a fast beat, and the band members are really ecstatic and energetic when performing with their instruments. This is done to make the video match with the doing in tone and tempo, also it shows that the band are enjoying themselves while playing the music. This in short makes the video look exciting to watch, if it is a fast pace song.

Another convention of videos in the rock genre, is that they try to tell a story while using the lyrics as a guide for: subject, setting and meaning. In this example the song is about a revolution of some kind taking place in a dark world. This is the case with lyrics like "we will be victorious" signifying a battle to be won, that is the videos subject. With the title being Uprising. Along with the dark tone of the video showing that the people who live there are having hard times. The story would be the people rising up for a better world as heard in the lyrics.

A lot of rock music videos often reflect something about the band. Whether it would be the lighting to show that the songs are dramatic; or even bright and colorful to reflect a songs up beat tone. But in the case of this example, it tells us this bands choice of main colour scheme. These colours would be: red, white and black. We can tell this because these three colours are the only colours that are used through out the whole video. This tells us that these artist may use this scheme a lot for logos, videos and maybe even album covers, given that these colours are used that much. And upon looking further into the matter this is the case with this band.

My final convention i found from rock music video, is that the editing speed with match the tempo of the song. In this example the editing is very fast when cutting between shots used in the video; cutting back and forth between the band members, the singer and a taxi in New York. Not only that but when the bass groove would kick in, that's when the shots would change and match the songs beat. A lot of videos in this genre use this editing technique of having shots change in between music riffs, bars and grooves; whether it be a fast paced song like this, or a song with a slower melody.

Examples of music video conventions.

1) Fast Moving images on screen or in the videos editing:
Pendulum's Water Colour: This video is an example of both fast images and editing happening during the video.

Fatboy Slim's Weapon of Choice: On the other hand this video is an example that uses fast moving images done in fewer shots with less fast editing, mainly because the video is mostly a dance routine.

2) The artist, singer or band being the main focus of the music video:
Daft Punk Get Lucky:

Pendulum's Water Colour:

3) Editing depending on songs tempo, e.g fast or slow speed:
Crush Pendulum :The song has a fast tempo in order to match with the pacing of the song being played.
Imagine Dragons Demons: This video uses a slower pace in order to match up with the tone and pacing off the music.

4) Stylistic setting and design of where the video takes place in, in order to make the video look interesting:
Paramore Brick by boring brick uses exotic locations in order to make the video looks nice and interesting to the viewer.

Fun We are young: This video uses a slow motion style of filming and editing to match up with its up beat tone and slow pace.

5) Different ranges of shot types in the video to show important details, such as the emotions of the performers with close ups, the locations of the video's setting with wide shots, extreme close ups identifying props etc.

Bastille's The Night. This music video uses close ups to show the emotion of the actors face, in this case it the emotion give the tone of the music and the events happening in the video itself.

Soft Cell Tainted Love: In this is example of the songs video, the different range is used to show multiple things in the video such as: set, props and the emotions of the characters in the video. With the main singers face being shown the most out of the characters in the video.

Music Video Connventions:

Music videos follow certain conventions. Some of them include the pace of the video in terms of what is being show on screen, or the tempo of the editing of the video itself.  What i mean is the video could have movement of something like a dance routine that matches the tune on screen in terms of the pace, timing or the energy that the song has. Or alternatively the editing pace could match up with the music by having loads of quick cuts and jumps as the music plays throughout the video, with the amount of cuts depending on how fast or slow the tune your using is.

Another convention i found in the music videos i watched, was that the singers or band would been seen performing the song as the video is being played. This would usually evolve a set of clips being played with the performance clip of the singer or band gets cut in between each section of the video. Or the video could just simply be footage of the singer or band playing the song with the video cutting to different shots of the singers face, instruments and shots of the whole band. Speaking of shots, close ups are used a lot in the videos i researched. Whether it would be shots of the performers face, instruments or any other props used in the video

Self Assessment and Peer Assessment on Radio Logos

Self Assessment:
My four Peer Assessments:

When i asked my target audience what their feelings were, they said they were very eye catching. However they did say that some of the logos like Buzz and Lock could've had a clearer showing of what genre these stations belonged to. Also each logo could've used a dark background to make the glows stand out more.
